Dave Portnoy Says He’s Considering Running Against NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has revealed that he is considering a possible run for mayor of New York City, saying he would “love to run against” incumbent Mayor Zohran Mamdani if he decides to enter the race.

Speaking during an appearance on Jesse Watters Primetime on Fox News, Portnoy said New York City would be the only place where he would seriously consider seeking public office. While acknowledging that he is uncertain about his chances of winning, the media entrepreneur expressed confidence that his track record as a businessman and philanthropist would resonate with voters.

“I would love to run against him,” Portnoy said when asked whether he would challenge Mayor Mamdani. He added that although he does not know if he could win, he believes he has earned the support of many New Yorkers through his contributions to the city.

Portnoy pointed to his work through the Barstool Fund, which provided financial assistance to struggling small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as his continued support for local pizza restaurants and other community initiatives. According to him, those efforts demonstrate that he has made meaningful contributions to New York beyond the world of sports media.

The Barstool Sports founder also argued that his experience in building and managing a successful business distinguishes him from many career politicians. He criticized elected officials whom he described as lacking real-world work experience, saying leadership should be grounded in practical knowledge rather than political careers alone.

Portnoy’s comments come after months of publicly criticizing Mayor Mamdani. Before the mayoral election, he said he had even considered relocating Barstool Sports’ New York office if Mamdani won, explaining that he strongly opposed the prospect of the city’s leadership under the current mayor.

At the time, Portnoy admitted he was conflicted because moving the company’s headquarters could negatively affect employees who work in New York. While expressing frustration over Mamdani’s leadership, he questioned whether leaving the city would ultimately make a meaningful difference.

During his latest television appearance, Portnoy reiterated his concerns about the direction of New York City, describing the current political climate as a “scary time” and calling for stronger leadership. He suggested that the city needs leaders with practical business experience who understand the challenges facing residents and employers.

Although Portnoy has not officially declared his candidacy, his remarks have fueled speculation that the outspoken entrepreneur could enter New York City’s political arena in the future. For now, his comments add another chapter to his long-running criticism of Mayor Zohran Mamdani and highlight the growing intersection between business, media and politics in one of America’s most influential cities.
