Lionel Messi to Start on the Bench as Argentina Face Jordan After Securing Knockout Spot

Argentina captain Lionel Messi will begin Saturday’s FIFA World Cup Group J encounter against Jordan on the bench, with head coach Lionel Scaloni choosing to rest his star forward after the reigning world champions secured qualification for the knockout stage.

Having already booked their place in the next round and clinched the top spot in Group J, Argentina has the luxury of rotating its squad ahead of the knockout phase. Messi has played a pivotal role in the team’s impressive campaign, scoring all five of Argentina’s goals in victories over Algeria and Austria to ensure early qualification.

Speaking before the match, Scaloni confirmed that the Inter Miami forward would not be included in the starting lineup but is expected to feature later in the game.

According to the Argentina coach, Messi will be introduced as a substitute, allowing the team to carefully manage the workload of their captain while giving other members of the squad valuable playing time.

Scaloni also dismissed any suggestion that Argentina would field a weakened side against Jordan. He emphasized that every player selected deserves the opportunity to represent the national team, praising the commitment and professionalism shown by those who have patiently waited for their chance throughout the tournament.

The coach explained that every member of the squad has contributed significantly during training and preparations, adding that their dedication has helped maintain the team’s high standards even when they are not on the pitch.

Scaloni further revealed that his long-term objective is to build a squad capable of delivering consistent performances regardless of the personnel on the field. He stressed that the strength of the team lies not only in its star players but also in the collective effort and depth within the squad.

With Argentina already through to the knockout rounds, Saturday’s clash offers an opportunity to rotate the squad, preserve key players, and maintain momentum as the defending champions continue their quest for another FIFA World Cup title.
