Qatar Gas Hub Explosion Injures 54, Leaves 18 Missing as Authorities Investigate Cause

A massive explosion at one of Qatar’s key gas facilities has left at least 54 people injured and 18 others missing, raising fresh concerns about the stability of the Gulf nation’s energy infrastructure.

The blast occurred late Sunday at the Barzan local gas supply facility located within Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar’s largest energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG) hub. The explosion sent towering flames and thick smoke into the night sky, with the impact reportedly felt as far away as Doha, the country’s capital.

According to Qatar’s Interior Ministry, the incident was caused by a technical malfunction during the restart of operations at the facility. Authorities described the event as an internal explosion and confirmed that emergency response teams were quickly deployed to contain the resulting fire.

QatarEnergy, the state-owned energy company, said the fire was brought under control after swift intervention by emergency crews. Ras Laffan Industrial City is one of the most important energy centers in the world and serves as the backbone of Qatar’s natural gas industry. The Barzan facility plays a critical role in supplying gas to domestic power generation plants, water desalination facilities, and various industrial operations across the country. It is also capable of producing valuable by-products including ethane, condensates, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and sulfur for both domestic use and export markets.
