Host nation Mexico national football team booked their place in the knockout rounds of the World Cup after a narrow 1-0 victory over South Korea national football team in a tense Group A clash in Guadalajara on Thursday.
The result made Mexico the first team to secure qualification for the last 32, sealing top spot in the group with a match still to play. In front of a lively and emotional home crowd, the atmosphere at Guadalajara Stadium played a huge role as the hosts edged a tightly contested encounter.
After a cautious and largely uneventful first half, Mexico found the breakthrough shortly after the restart. Luis Romo capitalized on a costly goalkeeping mistake to slot home what proved to be the decisive goal, sending the stadium into celebration and putting the hosts firmly in control of the group.
Despite taking the lead, Mexico were forced to withstand heavy pressure in the closing stages. Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel emerged as a key figure, producing a brilliant double save in the dying minutes to preserve his team’s advantage and secure all three points.
Speaking after the match, head coach Javier Aguirre admitted the emotional intensity of the game but praised both his players and the passionate home supporters who turned the stadium into a sea of green.
He highlighted Rangel’s late heroics as a defining moment of the match, describing the save as outstanding and crucial to the team’s victory. Aguirre also acknowledged that while the match was tactically difficult and not always entertaining, the unwavering support from fans helped carry the team through.
With the win, Mexico finish top of Group A and will continue their World Cup campaign at home in Mexico City, where they are set to face a third-placed team in the round of 32.
Elsewhere in the group, South Korea remain in a strong position with three points, while the Czech Republic and South Africa are still in contention on one point each. South Korea will face South Africa in their next fixture, a match that could decide the final qualification spots from the group.
As the tournament progresses, Mexico’s strong start and home advantage are making them one of the early teams to watch, with confidence growing inside the squad after a disciplined and hard-fought performance.
