Nigerian Diplomat Ahunna Eziakonwa Appointed UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Africa

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has appointed Nigerian development expert and diplomat Ahunna Eziakonwa as his new Special Adviser on Africa, marking another significant milestone for Nigeria’s representation within the global organization.

The announcement was made on Friday by the United Nations, which confirmed that Eziakonwa will succeed Cristina Duarte of Cabo Verde in the influential role. The UN also expressed appreciation for Duarte’s service and contributions during her tenure.

Eziakonwa assumes the position with nearly three decades of experience across various leadership roles within the United Nations system. Widely respected for her expertise in development, humanitarian affairs, and international cooperation, she brings extensive knowledge of Africa’s political, economic, and social landscape to her new assignment.

Currently serving as the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator, and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Eziakonwa oversees the organization’s development efforts across 46 African countries. Her responsibilities have included supporting governments in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals under Agenda 2030, as well as aligning development initiatives with the African Union’s long-term Agenda 2063 framework.

Since taking on the leadership of UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Africa in 2018, she has played a key role in shaping development strategies aimed at promoting economic growth, governance reforms, poverty reduction, and sustainable development across the continent.

Her career within the United Nations spans a wide range of critical assignments. Eziakonwa has served as United Nations Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator, and UNDP Resident Representative in countries including Ethiopia, Uganda, and Lesotho. In those positions, she coordinated humanitarian operations, development programmes, and political engagement efforts, helping to strengthen collaboration between governments, international partners, and local communities.

Beyond her field assignments, she has also held senior leadership roles at UN headquarters. As Chief of the Africa Section at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in New York, she managed humanitarian operations across 15 African nations and contributed to responses during some of the continent’s most challenging crises.

Her experience further extends to peacekeeping, political affairs, and strategic communications, having worked with several key UN departments, including the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the Department of Political Affairs, and the Department of Public Information. These roles provided her with deep insight into conflict prevention, peacebuilding, governance, and international diplomacy.

Before joining the United Nations, Eziakonwa built her career within African civil society organizations, where she worked on development and advocacy initiatives focused on improving the lives of communities across the continent.

Her appointment is being viewed as a significant recognition of her decades-long commitment to Africa’s development and her extensive experience within the UN system. As Special Adviser on Africa, she is expected to play a vital role in supporting the Secretary-General’s engagement with African leaders, regional institutions, and international partners on issues ranging from peace and security to sustainable development and economic transformation.

The appointment also highlights Nigeria’s continued contribution to international diplomacy and global development leadership, with Eziakonwa joining a distinguished list of Nigerians who have served in senior positions within multilateral institutions.

As Africa continues to navigate complex challenges and opportunities in areas such as economic growth, climate change, governance, and security, Eziakonwa’s new role places her at the center of efforts to shape the continent’s future on the global stage.
