Tinubu Renames Kaduna Petroleum Institute After Shehu Musa Yar’Adua

President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming and revitalisation of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology, in recognition of the late military officer and statesman’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.

The announcement was made during the president’s 2026 Democracy Day national broadcast, where he reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey and paid tribute to individuals who played pivotal roles in shaping the nation’s political landscape.

Speaking on the significance of national progress and collective responsibility, Tinubu emphasized the importance of honoring leaders whose efforts laid the foundation for the democratic system Nigerians enjoy today. He described General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua as one of the foremost architects of modern democratic Nigeria, noting that his vision, leadership, and commitment to national unity left a lasting impact on the country’s political evolution.

According to the president, the decision to transform and rename the institution is intended to preserve Yar’Adua’s legacy while strengthening Nigeria’s capacity in geological sciences, engineering, and technological innovation. The move also aligns with broader efforts to expand educational opportunities and develop specialized institutions capable of supporting the country’s economic growth and industrial ambitions.

General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua remains one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s political history. As Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, he served as the nation’s de facto vice president under the military administration of General Olusegun Obasanjo between 1976 and 1979. During that period, he played a central role in overseeing Nigeria’s historic transition from military rule to an elected civilian government, marking one of the country’s most significant democratic milestones.

Following his retirement from military service, Yar’Adua remained actively involved in politics and nation-building. He founded the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), a political organization that became highly influential in shaping Nigeria’s democratic process and nurturing future political leaders across the country.
