Somali referee Omar Artan has received a major boost to his career after UEFA appointed him to officiate next season’s UEFA Super Cup, just weeks after he was denied entry into the United States and subsequently removed from the list of officials for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The appointment is being viewed by many in the football community as a strong vote of confidence in Artan’s abilities and professionalism following a difficult period that threatened to overshadow one of African football’s most inspiring success stories.
UEFA confirmed that Artan will take charge of the prestigious Super Cup clash between UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League champions Aston Villa. The match is scheduled to take place on August 12 in Salzburg, Austria, and traditionally serves as the curtain-raiser to the European club football season.
According to UEFA, the decision was reached following consultations with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), highlighting the growing recognition of African referees on the global stage.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin praised Artan’s credentials and described him as one of the most promising officials in the game today. He noted that the Somali referee had consistently demonstrated high-level officiating standards in CAF competitions and had earned the opportunity through merit and performance.
Ceferin also emphasized football’s role in bringing people together and said UEFA wanted to recognize Artan’s contribution to the sport by entrusting him with one of the most prestigious fixtures outside major international tournaments.
Artan’s appointment comes after a controversial episode surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Somali official was among the 52 referees selected by FIFA to officiate at the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, making him the first referee from Somalia to achieve the milestone.
However, his historic opportunity was cut short when he was denied entry into the United States upon arrival at Miami International Airport. U.S. authorities reportedly stated that he was ineligible for admission due to alleged associations with suspected members of terrorist organizations.
Following the incident, FIFA confirmed that Artan would no longer be part of the World Cup officiating team, a decision that sparked disappointment among many football supporters and officials across Africa.
Despite the setback, Artan received a hero’s welcome when he returned to Somalia. Thousands celebrated his achievements, viewing his journey as a source of national pride and inspiration for young Somalis aspiring to succeed in international sports.
Speaking after his return, Artan remained optimistic about his future and expressed determination to continue pursuing excellence in refereeing. He vowed to work toward participating in the next FIFA World Cup in 2030, signaling that the recent disappointment would not define his career.
The UEFA Super Cup appointment now offers Artan an opportunity to showcase his talents on one of football’s biggest stages. With millions of fans expected to watch the encounter between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa, the match represents not only a personal milestone but also a significant moment for Somali and African football.
