The Kogi State Government has announced the immediate suspension of the popular Echane Festival in Ebiraland following growing security concerns in parts of the state.
The decision was disclosed on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, who said the move became necessary after intelligence reports warned that activities connected to the annual festival could threaten public peace and security across communities in Kogi Central Senatorial District.
According to the state government, credible security information indicated that the celebration could trigger unrest and potentially lead to a breakdown of law and order if allowed to proceed as planned.
Fanwo stated that Governor Ahmed Ododo approved the suspension in the interest of protecting lives and maintaining peace across the affected areas.
While acknowledging the cultural significance of the Echane Festival to the Ebira people, the government stressed that public safety must remain the top priority.
The commissioner explained that all security agencies operating within the state have been directed to enforce strict compliance with the suspension order to prevent any unauthorized festival-related activities.
The government also warned individuals or groups against organizing, promoting, or participating in activities associated with the suspended festival, noting that violators would face legal consequences.
Fanwo reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to preserving peace and safeguarding lives and property throughout the state. He added that the government would continue to take proactive security measures to prevent violence and ensure stability in all communities.
The state government further appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, opinion leaders, and residents of Ebiraland to cooperate fully with security agencies and support efforts aimed at maintaining harmony during the period of the suspension.
According to the commissioner, security considerations will continue to play a major role in government decisions involving large public gatherings and cultural activities.
The Echane Festival is one of the most prominent cultural celebrations in Ebiraland and is traditionally held across several districts, including Ihima, Okene, Adavi, and Eika. The annual event, usually celebrated between April and June, is widely known for its colorful masquerade displays, traditional music performances, and communal dances that attract participants and spectators from different parts of the state.
The suspension is expected to generate mixed reactions among residents and cultural enthusiasts, especially given the festival’s deep cultural and historical importance to the Ebira people.
However, the Kogi State Government insists that the decision was taken purely in the interest of public safety and the preservation of peace across the region.
