Tension is rising in Yashikira community in Kwara State after suspected terrorists reportedly threatened to forcibly marry the wives of the Emir of Yashikira and other female captives to their commanders if a ransom demand of N150 million is not paid.
The threat was reportedly communicated through contacts linked to ongoing negotiations between the abductors and individuals involved in efforts to secure the victims’ release.
According to security sources familiar with the rescue operations, the kidnappers issued the warning following delays in the ransom negotiations after the victims were abducted during a deadly midnight attack on May 24, 2026.
The attack targeted both the palace of the Emir of Yashikira and the Yashikira Police Divisional Headquarters located in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Sources disclosed that the abductors are demanding approximately N15 million for each victim, with an estimated 10 persons currently being held captive, bringing the total ransom demand to about N150 million.
One source involved in the negotiations revealed that the kidnappers threatened severe consequences if the ransom is not paid quickly. According to the source, the abductors warned that the Emir’s wives and other female captives would be forcibly married off to members of the terror group if discussions continue to stall.
The disturbing development has reportedly increased fear and anxiety among residents of the community as families continue to wait for positive news regarding the victims’ release.
Local vigilante groups and security operatives working in the area have also been informed about the threats as efforts to rescue the captives continue.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the attack and stated that at least 10 persons were abducted during the invasion. Authorities also revealed that sections of the Emir’s palace were damaged by fire during the assault.
Security agencies are continuing operations aimed at securing the safe release of all victims while investigations into the attack remain ongoing.
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over insecurity and kidnapping activities affecting several communities across Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where armed groups continue to target traditional institutions, schools, and local residents.
Residents of Yashikira and surrounding communities are now calling for intensified security measures and urgent government intervention to ensure the safe return of the abducted victims and prevent further attacks in the region.
