Omoyele Sowore has called for a ₦500,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers, insisting that the current economic realities in the country demand significantly better salaries for public servants and workers across essential sectors.
The human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress made the statement on Wednesday while advocating improved welfare packages for workers facing rising inflation and increasing living costs in Nigeria.
According to Sowore, a ₦500,000 minimum wage should not be considered excessive given the economic hardship many Nigerians currently face. He argued that workers who provide critical services to the country deserve salaries capable of guaranteeing a decent standard of living.
Speaking on the issue, Sowore emphasized that police officers, soldiers, teachers, doctors, nurses, and other public servants should receive wages that reflect the importance of their duties and the realities of the nation’s economy.
He also stressed that workers in high-risk and essential sectors should be entitled to additional allowances because of the sacrifices and responsibilities attached to their jobs.
Sowore’s comments come at a time when conversations around workers’ welfare, inflation, and salary structures have intensified nationwide. Many Nigerians have continued to express concern over the rising cost of food, transportation, housing, electricity, and other basic necessities, with labour unions and civil society groups repeatedly demanding stronger economic relief measures from the government.
The debate over minimum wage has remained a major national issue, especially as businesses, labour organizations, and government agencies continue discussions on balancing workers’ welfare with economic sustainability.
