A former senior official linked to the Central Intelligence Agency has been arrested after Federal Bureau of Investigation agents reportedly discovered hundreds of gold bars worth more than $40 million inside his Virginia residence.
The suspect, identified as David Rush, is facing charges related to the alleged theft of public funds following an extensive investigation involving both the FBI and the CIA.
According to court documents, Rush allegedly submitted multiple requests to the US government between November 2025 and March 2026 seeking large amounts of foreign currency and gold bars, claiming the assets were required for official work-related expenses. Authorities said the requests were approved and the valuables were later released to him.
However, investigators claimed that during an internal review, the CIA could not account for the gold bars or significant portions of the foreign currency allegedly obtained by Rush. Officials also reportedly found no documentation showing that the assets had been used or returned for any legitimate government purpose.
The investigation intensified after CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred the matter to the FBI following findings from an internal inquiry into possible legal violations.
FBI agents executed a search warrant at Rush’s home in Virginia on May 18, where authorities said they uncovered approximately 303 gold bars, each weighing about one kilogram. Based on current market prices, investigators estimated the value of the recovered gold to exceed $40 million.
In addition to the gold bars, agents reportedly seized around $2 million in cash and 35 luxury watches, including several Rolex timepieces.
Court filings also accused Rush of falsifying aspects of his background when applying for government employment. Prosecutors alleged that he misrepresented his educational qualifications and military service history while also fraudulently claiming military leave benefits worth thousands of dollars.
The former official, who reportedly held top-secret security clearance and had access to classified information, is currently being held in detention pending a court hearing scheduled for later this week.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed why the gold bars and cash were allegedly being stored at the residence. Rush’s attorney has reportedly declined to comment on the allegations.
The case has drawn major public attention in the United States due to the enormous value of the seized assets and the suspect’s reported senior-level ties within the intelligence community. The investigation remains ongoing as federal authorities continue examining the full scope of the alleged misconduct.
