Nigeria has secured the 24th position out of 153 countries in the International Boxing Association (IBA) 2026 world rankings, highlighting the country’s growing presence in global boxing.
According to the latest rankings released by the IBA, Nigeria amassed a total of 12,150 points, placing it ahead of several established boxing nations, including France and the United States, both of which are tied in 25th place with 11,500 points each.
The ranking reflects Nigeria’s performances across major international and continental boxing competitions over the designated scoring period. At the top of the global rankings is Uzbekistan, which currently leads with 48,700 points, reinforcing its reputation as one of the world’s strongest boxing nations.
Russia follows in second place with 40,850 points, while Kazakhstan occupies third with 38,300 points. The Democratic Republic of Congo ranks fourth globally with 36,825 points, making it one of Africa’s strongest boxing nations in the latest standings.
Rounding out the top five is Australia, which recorded 33,725 points. Other notable positions include Morocco, ranked sixth with 29,600 points, while China holds ninth place with 19,100 points.
Nigeria’s placement is a reflection of its performance in officially sanctioned elite boxing competitions recognised by the IBA. The ranking system is built on a two-year rolling points model, which tracks boxer performances across key tournaments and gradually adjusts scores over time.
Under the IBA framework, athletes and national federations accumulate points based on their results in competitions such as the Olympic Games, World Championships, Continental Championships, and World Boxing Tour events.
Points are awarded according to competition level and final placement, meaning stronger performances at higher-level tournaments contribute significantly more to a country’s overall ranking.
As newer competitions are completed, older results begin to lose value, ensuring the rankings remain reflective of recent form and competitiveness. Nigeria’s current position suggests the country has been steadily building momentum in international boxing through consistent participation and results across the ranking cycle.
The achievement is particularly notable given the competitive nature of global boxing and the presence of long-established boxing powerhouses within the rankings.
For Nigerian boxing, the ranking could serve as an encouraging signal for athletes, coaches, and sports administrators working to improve the country’s standing on the global stage. It also highlights the importance of continued investment in athlete development, international exposure, and participation in elite competitions.
As the rankings continue to evolve with each competition cycle, Nigeria will have opportunities to improve its position further through strong performances at upcoming continental and international events.
For now, ranking among the world’s top 25 boxing nations marks an important milestone for Nigerian boxing and reinforces the country’s growing competitiveness in the sport.
