Italy Suspends Automatic Renewal of Defence Deal With Israel Amid Rising Diplomatic Strains

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced the suspension of the automatic renewal of a defence cooperation agreement with Israel, signaling a notable shift in relations between the two traditionally close partners as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a wine fair in Verona, Meloni said the decision reflects Italy’s response to the evolving situation in the region. According to her, the government is acting in line with its disagreements over recent developments, particularly the escalating conflict involving Israel and Lebanon.

In recent weeks, Italy—long considered one of Israel’s supportive allies in Europe under Meloni’s right-wing leadership—has become increasingly critical of Israel’s military operations in Lebanon. The attacks, which have reportedly caused significant casualties and widespread injuries, have intensified diplomatic friction.

Tensions further escalated after Israeli forces allegedly fired warning shots near Italian troops serving in Lebanon under a United Nations mandate, an incident that caused damage to a military vehicle and sparked concern in Rome over the safety of its peacekeepers.

Meloni emphasized that Italy’s position is guided by principle rather than political alignment, stating that when disagreements arise, her government responds accordingly. The suspension of the defence agreement marks one of the clearest signals yet of Italy recalibrating its foreign policy stance in the region.

The move also comes at a time of broader diplomatic repositioning for Meloni’s administration. Just a day earlier, she publicly criticised former U.S. President Donald Trump over remarks targeting Pope Leo, further highlighting growing tensions between Italy and some of its key international allies.

As the Middle East conflict continues to shape global alliances, Italy’s decision reflects the increasing complexity of balancing traditional partnerships with emerging geopolitical realities.

Pope Leo, whose comments and role were drawn into the wider diplomatic discussion, has also become part of the broader international conversation surrounding the controversy.

For now, the suspension of the defence agreement adds a new layer of uncertainty to Italy–Israel relations, raising questions about how long-standing alliances may evolve under pressure from ongoing regional conflicts involving Israel and its neighbors.
