China’s President, Xi Jinping, has delivered a strong message on the future of Taiwan, declaring that Beijing will “absolutely not tolerate” any moves toward independence. His remarks come at a time of heightened tensions across the Taiwan Strait, a region that remains one of the most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints in the world.
Speaking during a meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Xi addressed Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT). Cheng is currently on what she describes as a “peace mission,” aimed at easing rising tensions between China and Taiwan amid increasing military pressure from Beijing.
Xi emphasized the importance of unity, framing relations across the strait as a shared national identity. According to him, people on both sides are part of “one family,” with common aspirations for peace, development, and cooperation. However, he made it clear that any push for Taiwan independence represents a direct threat to stability in the region.
Reiterating Beijing’s long-standing “One China” principle, Xi described independence efforts as the primary cause of instability in the Taiwan Strait. He stressed that China remains committed to eventual reunification, a goal that continues to shape its policies toward the island.
The Chinese leader also called for stronger collaboration between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang, urging both sides to build political trust and maintain constructive engagement. He expressed hope that such cooperation could pave the way for what he described as a “bright future” of national reunification and broader national rejuvenation.
Meanwhile, relations between Beijing and Taiwan’s current administration remain strained. China has refused to engage with Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, labeling him a separatist. In response, Taipei has pushed back, urging visiting opposition figures to call on China to reduce military threats and engage directly with Taiwan’s democratically elected government.
As diplomatic efforts continue alongside rising tensions, Xi’s remarks highlight the deep divisions that persist, underscoring the delicate balance between calls for peace and the realities of an unresolved political dispute that continues to draw global attention.
