Lagos Partners MTN to Transform Obalende Under-Bridge Into Modern Y’ELLO Bus Park

The Lagos State Government has announced a strategic partnership with MTN Nigeria to redevelop the Obalende under-bridge into a modern, purpose-built transport hub to be known as the Y’ELLO Bus Park, marking another step in the state’s drive to reclaim and modernize public spaces.

The announcement was made on January 27 by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a message shared with Lagos residents on X. According to Wahab, the project is designed to improve urban mobility, safety, sanitation, and environmental sustainability in one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Wahab explained that the redevelopment will replace what has long been regarded as a degraded and disorderly space with a structured, secure, and community-focused transport facility. The Y’ELLO Bus Park is expected to feature an organized and regulated transport terminal, public conveniences, kiosks, and other essential amenities aimed at serving commuters and residents in the Obalende area.

The new facility will also include a recycling drop-off station, a road camp for LAWMA sweepers, and designated spaces for security agencies, reinforcing both environmental responsibility and public safety. More than 60 public toilet fixtures are planned as part of efforts to improve hygiene and reduce open defecation around the area.

Safety and urban design are central to the project, Wahab noted. The park will be equipped with solar-powered lighting to improve nighttime visibility, reduce blind spots, and enhance the effectiveness of CCTV surveillance. These measures, he said, are aimed at discouraging criminal activity and creating a safer environment for commuters and nearby residents.

Environmental management is another key focus of the redevelopment. A biodigester system will be installed to sustainably manage wastewater generated within the park, while the recycling station is expected to curb illegal waste dumping in and around Obalende.

In line with Lagos State’s climate and sustainability goals, the project will incorporate renewable energy solutions, including solar panels to reduce long-term energy costs and carbon emissions. Tree planting is also planned to improve air quality and enhance the overall visual appeal of the area.

Wahab described the initiative as part of the government’s broader vision to reclaim public spaces and make them functional, safe, and sustainable for Lagos residents. He emphasized that the collaboration with MTN Nigeria reflects a growing commitment to public-private partnerships in addressing urban challenges.

The commissioner concluded by reaffirming the administration’s determination to build a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Lagos, stressing that projects like the Y’ELLO Bus Park are designed to ensure public infrastructure works better for the people who depend on it every day.
