France Seizes Sanctioned Russian Oil Tanker in Mediterranean, Macron Confirms

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France has seized a Russian-linked oil tanker in the Mediterranean Sea, marking a significant enforcement move against Moscow’s efforts to evade international sanctions.

In a statement shared on social media on Thursday, Macron said the French Navy intercepted the vessel on the high seas after determining it was connected to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” — a network of tankers allegedly used to bypass Western sanctions on Russian oil exports. He noted that the tanker was coming from Russia, was subject to international sanctions, and was suspected of operating under a false flag.

According to Macron, the interception was carried out in full compliance with international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and involved cooperation with several allied countries. He confirmed that the vessel has since been diverted and that a formal investigation is now underway.

French maritime authorities identified the tanker as Grinch, which was seized in waters between Spain and Morocco. The United Kingdom later confirmed its involvement in the operation, with Defence Secretary John Healey stating that the UK provided tracking support to help monitor the ship’s movements before the interception.

The seizure comes amid intensified European efforts to enforce sanctions imposed on Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The European Union has rolled out more than a dozen sanctions packages targeting Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and key industries.

Despite these measures, Russia has continued to export millions of barrels of oil, particularly to countries such as China and India, often at discounted prices. Much of this trade is believed to rely on a shadow fleet of aging or obscurely registered vessels operating outside the traditional Western maritime and insurance systems.

French officials say the latest operation underscores Europe’s determination to tighten enforcement and disrupt networks used to undermine sanctions. As investigations into the seized tanker continue, the incident is likely to heighten tensions with Moscow while reinforcing coordination among Western allies seeking to limit Russia’s ability to finance the war through energy exports.
