U.S. President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new trade measures targeting Iran and its global economic partners, declaring that any country conducting business with Tehran will face a 25% tariff on all trade with the United States.
The announcement was made on Monday via Trump’s Truth Social account, as Washington weighs its response to Iran’s most significant wave of anti-government protests in years. In his post, Trump said the tariff would take effect immediately, leaving little room for interpretation or negotiation.
“Effective immediately, any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Trump wrote, adding that the order was “final and conclusive.”
The move signals a sharp escalation in U.S. economic pressure on Iran, which has been under heavy American sanctions for years. While the tariffs would technically be paid by U.S. importers bringing goods in from affected countries, the policy is designed to discourage foreign governments and companies from maintaining commercial ties with Tehran.
Iran, a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), relies heavily on oil exports, with China as its largest buyer. Other key trading partners include Turkey, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and India—countries that could now find themselves caught between maintaining economic relations with Iran and preserving access to the U.S. market.
The announcement comes at a tense moment for Iran, where widespread protests have erupted across the country, posing one of the most serious challenges to the government in years. While Trump did not explicitly link the tariffs to the protests, the timing underscores Washington’s increasingly hardline approach toward Tehran.
With no further details provided by the White House, uncertainty remains over how the policy will be enforced and whether exemptions could emerge.
