Real Madrid have confirmed the departure of head coach Xabi Alonso, ending his short spell at the Santiago Bernabéu by mutual consent. The decision was announced on Monday, just one day after Los Blancos suffered a painful 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.
In an official statement, the club said it had agreed with Alonso to bring his tenure as first-team coach to an end, signaling a swift response to growing pressure following recent performances. The loss to Barcelona in Saudi Arabia proved to be the final blow for the Basque coach, whose side were outplayed by Hansi Flick’s men in a high-intensity Clásico showdown.
Moments later, Real Madrid confirmed that former club defender Álvaro Arbeloa has been appointed as Alonso’s replacement. While the club did not disclose the length of the 42-year-old’s contract, it emphasized his deep roots within the Madrid setup. Arbeloa has been in charge of Castilla, the club’s reserve team, since June 2025 and has worked within Real Madrid’s academy system since 2020.
Alonso took over the reins in June after Carlo Ancelotti’s departure, arriving with high expectations following his impressive rise in coaching. However, consistency proved elusive during his time in charge. Despite flashes of promise, Madrid struggled to dominate domestically and currently sit second in La Liga, four points behind arch-rivals Barcelona.
The pressure on Alonso had been mounting toward the end of 2025, with reports suggesting his position was under serious threat. A run of five consecutive league wins temporarily eased concerns and kept him in the job, but the Super Cup final defeat ultimately sealed his fate.
Arbeloa now steps into one of football’s most demanding roles at a critical point in the season. A former Real Madrid and Spain international, he is well known for his discipline, leadership, and deep understanding of the club’s culture. His promotion signals Madrid’s willingness to trust internal solutions as they attempt to steady the ship and reignite their title challenge.
With major domestic and European objectives still within reach, all eyes will now be on Arbeloa as he begins his first chapter as Real Madrid’s head coach under intense scrutiny and expectation.
