Manchester United Sack Ruben Amorim After Poor Run, Darren Fletcher to Take Over

Manchester United have officially parted ways with Ruben Amorim, bringing an end to the Portuguese coach’s short and turbulent spell at Old Trafford.

In a statement confirming the decision, the club said Amorim had departed his role as head coach, explaining that with United currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, the leadership felt a change was necessary to give the team the best possible chance of achieving a higher league finish. The club thanked Amorim for his efforts and wished him well in his future career.

Amorim’s final match in charge was Sunday’s 1–1 draw against Leeds United, a result that left United in sixth place in the table. The 40-year-old exits with an unenviable record, having overseen the lowest win percentage of any Manchester United manager in the post–Sir Alex Ferguson era. During his time at the club, Amorim won just 24 of his 63 matches in charge.

Following his dismissal, Darren Fletcher, who currently coaches Manchester United’s Under-18 side, is expected to step in as interim manager until the end of the season. His first task will be Wednesday night’s Premier League fixture against Burnley.

Amorim’s departure comes shortly after he publicly hinted at tensions between himself and the club’s hierarchy. After the Leeds draw, he stressed that he was hired as the “manager” of Manchester United rather than simply a head coach, a distinction he suggested had become a source of friction.

At the time, Amorim insisted he had no intention of resigning, saying he was prepared to continue in the role for up to 18 months or until the board decided otherwise. He stated that he would carry on doing his job until a replacement was appointed.

Manchester United will now look to stabilise their season under interim leadership as they reassess their long-term managerial direction amid ongoing pressure to return to the top of English football.
