Anthony Joshua Breaks Silence After Tragic Lagos–Ibadan Crash That Killed Two Team Members

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has spoken publicly for the first time following the tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close associates.

The crash occurred on December 29 along the Lagos–Ibadan expressway and involved members of Joshua’s inner team. While the 36-year-old boxer sustained only minor injuries, the incident proved fatal for Kevin Latif Ayodele, his longtime personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach.

Joshua was treated for his injuries and discharged from hospital on New Year’s Eve. He later returned to the United Kingdom on Saturday. On Sunday, the British-Nigerian boxer shared an emotional message across his social media platforms, marking his first public response since the tragedy.

Accompanying photos of himself standing in solidarity with the bereaved families of Ayodele and Ghami, Joshua wrote a short but powerful caption: “My Brother’s Keeper ❤️🕊️❤️.” The post drew an outpouring of support from fans, fellow athletes, and figures across the sports world.

Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities have provided updates on the legal proceedings surrounding the accident. The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that the driver involved, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence. The charges were filed on Friday.

A magistrate’s court has adjourned the case until January 20. Although bail was granted in the sum of ₦5,000,000, the defendant remains in custody pending the fulfilment of bail conditions.

The tragic loss has cast a shadow over Joshua’s camp, with tributes continuing to pour in for Ayodele and Ghami, both of whom played key roles in the boxer’s career and personal life.
