Somali Prime Minister Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland, Vows Continued Diplomatic Action

Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, has strongly criticized Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland, describing the move as a direct violation of Somalia’s sovereignty. Speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera, the prime minister said both the Somali government and its people firmly reject the decision, warning that it undermines the country’s territorial integrity.

Barre described the position taken by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as reckless, arguing that such recognition amounts to an attack on Somalia’s sovereignty. He added that Israel should instead have focused on recognizing the State of Palestine, rather than taking steps that further complicate regional and international relations.

According to the prime minister, Somalia has already begun responding through diplomatic channels. He said the government has established contact with several international states and organizations to present its position and seek support. Barre noted that Somalia has received positive international and regional reactions, which he said validate the country’s stance on the issue.

He emphasized that Somalia will continue to pursue its case through all available legal and diplomatic means, making it clear that the government intends to resist what it views as an infringement on national sovereignty. Barre stressed that Somalia remains committed to defending its unity and territorial integrity under international law.

The comments come amid rising tensions following Israel’s reported move, which has sparked strong reactions within Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa. Somali authorities maintain that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia, despite the region’s long-standing claim of independence.
