Russian President Vladimir Putin has held a meeting in Moscow with Nursultan Nazarbayev, the first president of Kazakhstan, in a move highlighting the long-standing relationship between the two leaders. The meeting was confirmed by the Kremlin press service.
According to the Kremlin, the talks took place in the dining room of the presidential apartments within the Kremlin, a location traditionally reserved for close and trusted associates. The choice of venue was described as a reflection of the strong personal ties and high level of mutual trust between Putin and Nazarbayev.
The Kremlin noted that President Putin remains in regular contact with the former Kazakh leader. Their previous meeting was reportedly held on May 29, underscoring the ongoing dialogue between both sides despite Nazarbayev no longer holding public office.
Nursultan Nazarbayev played a central role in Kazakhstan’s modern history, leading the country from its independence in 1991 until 2019. He assumed office following Kazakhstan’s first national presidential election on December 1, 1991, and went on to shape the political and economic foundations of the nation for nearly three decades.
On March 19, 2019, Nazarbayev announced his resignation from the presidency, formally handing over power to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who was named as his successor. Despite stepping down, Nazarbayev has remained an influential figure in regional politics.
The latest meeting between Putin and Nazarbayev highlights continued diplomatic engagement and personal rapport between the Russian leader and one of Central Asia’s most prominent political figures, reflecting the enduring ties between Russia and Kazakhstan.
