The Federal Bureau of Investigation has deployed personnel and investigative resources to Minnesota as part of a renewed effort to dismantle large-scale fraud schemes targeting U.S. federal programs. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the move on Sunday in a statement shared on social media, signaling an intensified federal response to alleged abuse of public funds.
According to Patel, the operation is focused on uncovering and disrupting organized fraud networks that exploit federal assistance programs, particularly those designed to support social services. While the FBI has not released detailed information about the scope or duration of the deployment, the announcement underscores growing concern within the Trump administration over alleged misuse of government funds in the state.
In recent weeks, Minnesota has been at the center of national attention following a series of high-profile fraud cases involving millions of dollars in federal aid. Reports citing the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Minnesota indicate that many of the individuals charged in these cases are of Somali descent, a development that has fueled political debate and drawn scrutiny to the state’s large Somali immigrant community.
President Donald Trump has referenced the investigations in public criticism of both the Somali diaspora and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who was the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in the 2024 election. The issue has since become a flashpoint in broader discussions around immigration, government oversight, and accountability in federal spending.
The FBI’s announcement comes shortly after an online report surfaced alleging that several daycare facilities receiving public funds in Minnesota were inactive. The report quickly gained traction on social media after Representative Tom Emmer, a Minnesota Republican, shared the video and called on Governor Walz to respond. Vice President JD Vance later amplified the report by sharing it with his followers on X.
