The Somaliland administration has arrested a well-known Islamic cleric, Sheikh Mohamed Ali Kaariye, following his public opposition to Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland. The cleric was detained after posting messages on social media urging the public to reject the move, authorities confirmed.
According to reports, Sheikh Kaariye shared a Facebook post strongly criticizing the recognition and calling on people to rise against it. The post quickly drew attention online, and he was reportedly arrested shortly after it was published.
In a statement released by the Somaliland Police, authorities confirmed that individuals accused of openly opposing the unity, sovereignty, and statehood of Somaliland had been taken into custody. While the police did not initially name the cleric, the statement made clear that the arrest was linked to actions viewed as threatening public order and national stability.
The police warned that anyone involved in activities considered harmful to Somaliland’s peace, security, or sovereignty would face legal consequences. They also called on citizens to remain vigilant and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining stability across the region.
The arrest has sparked debate both locally and online, particularly around issues of free expression, religious influence, and foreign relations. Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland has already generated mixed reactions, and the detention of a prominent religious figure has further intensified public discussion.
As of the time of reporting, authorities have not disclosed whether formal charges have been filed against Sheikh Kaariye, but security agencies maintain that the action was necessary to preserve peace and protect the interests of the self-declared republic.
