U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly threatened to cut all American aid to Nigeria and ordered the Pentagon to prepare for possible military action if the Nigerian government does not stop what he described as the killing of Christians by Islamist militants.
In a post on his social platform, Trump warned the United States “may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
The president’s statement — which included an instruction to “prepare for possible action” and a promise that any attack “will be fast, vicious, and sweet” — marks a sharp escalation in rhetoric toward Nigeria, a country long grappling with violence from extremist groups, communal clashes, and banditry. Trump also said Washington would “immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria” if the violence continued.
Nigeria’s federal government has rejected the characterization of the country as tolerating systematic attacks on Christians, calling the portrayal inaccurate and reaffirming constitutional protections for religious freedom.
Regional and international analysts note that many communities across Nigeria — both Christian and Muslim — have suffered from insurgency, communal violence, and criminal violence in recent years.
