Hong Kong Shut Down Ahead of Super Typhoon Ragasa, the World’s Strongest Storm of 2025

Hong Kong came to a standstill on Tuesday as Super Typhoon Ragasa, the most powerful tropical cyclone of the year, approached the region with devastating force. Authorities issued strong warnings, urging residents to stay indoors, while airlines announced the suspension of most passenger flights until Thursday.

Panic buying swept across the city as supermarkets were quickly emptied of essential goods, with residents stocking up on food, water, and supplies in preparation for potential shop closures lasting up to two days. In neighborhoods across Hong Kong, windows were taped in homes and businesses as people took precautionary measures to minimize damage from shattered glass caused by strong winds.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Ragasa is unleashing sustained winds of up to 220 km/h (137 mph), posing a “severe threat to the coast of Guangdong,” the neighboring Chinese province. The typhoon is expected to maintain its superstorm strength as it moves closer to the region, threatening Hong Kong, mainland China, and Taiwan after sweeping through the northern Philippines on Monday.

Forecasters predict that Ragasa will make landfall along Guangdong’s coastline between midday and late Wednesday, raising concerns of widespread flooding, property damage, and potential disruptions to infrastructure. Emergency services have been placed on high alert as the city braces for impact.
