Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, unleashed a sudden and dramatic eruption, sending tourists and guides scrambling for safety on Sicily’s rugged terrain. The unexpected volcanic activity took place while several tour groups were exploring the mountain, transforming a scenic adventure into a chaotic race for survival.

Videos from the scene showed groups of visitors running down the slopes while thick ash darkened the sky. Emergency crews were immediately dispatched to assist and evacuate the area. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported, but several people were treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Italian authorities are now monitoring Etna closely for further signs of activity and have temporarily suspended guided tours in the region.

Scientists from Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology confirmed the eruption was one of Etna’s frequent explosive episodes, but emphasized the importance of staying alert as the situation evolves.

Mount Etna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has captivated visitors for centuries with its raw power and beauty—but as this recent eruption reminds us, it also demands respect and caution.
