Former U.S. President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement released by his office on Sunday. The diagnosis follows a medical consultation last week, after Biden reported increasing urinary symptoms — a common early warning sign of prostate issues.

Doctors confirmed the diagnosis on Friday, identifying the illness as an aggressive form of prostate cancer, with a Gleason score of 9 out of 10 — one of the highest grades used to assess the severity and potential spread of the disease.

This classification suggests the cancer is “high-grade,” with a strong likelihood of rapid progression if not managed effectively.

Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, Biden’s office offered a measure of optimism, stating that the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive. This particular trait can make the disease more responsive to specific therapies aimed at controlling hormone levels, which are often key drivers in the growth of prostate cancer cells.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,” the statement read.

“On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone. While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management.”

Biden and his family are now in the process of reviewing treatment options with his medical team, considering the most appropriate path forward for his health and quality of life.

Since news of the diagnosis broke, bipartisan support has poured in from political leaders and citizens alike, highlighting Biden’s decades-long service and enduring presence in American public life. Messages of strength and well-wishes have come from both former allies and rivals, reflecting a rare moment of unity in an increasingly divided political landscape.

As the former president begins this challenging health journey, many across the U.S. and around the world are closely watching, hoping for a successful treatment and recovery. Biden’s resilience, often noted throughout his personal and political life, will undoubtedly be put to the test once again — and many believe he is up to the challenge.
