Kevin De Bruyne’s future at Manchester City is hanging in the balance, and a new report suggests the Belgian midfielder may be eyeing a quiet exit.
According to the Daily Star, the 33-year-old is considering skipping the upcoming Club World Cup this summer—concerned that a potential injury could derail his next big move.
De Bruyne’s current contract is set to expire on June 30, just a couple of weeks after the Club World Cup kicks off on June 14. While City retains the option to extend his deal by an additional two weeks—covering the full duration of the tournament, which ends on July 13—the veteran playmaker is reportedly hoping for a different outcome.

Sources close to the player say he’s eager to prioritize his long-term future and would prefer a break to prepare for what comes next, especially given the physical demands of elite competition and the career-defining decisions ahead.

There’s also a sense that De Bruyne hasn’t taken kindly to how the situation is being handled. The decision to let his contract run down without clarity on an extension has reportedly left the midfield maestro frustrated.

The expanded Club World Cup, now featuring 32 teams from around the globe, is a landmark event for FIFA and Manchester City.

The Premier League champions are set to face Moroccan side Wydad AC, AFC Champions League winners Al-Ain, and Italian giants Juventus in the group stage. However, De Bruyne’s involvement remains uncertain.
If he does choose to sit it out, and with his contract winding down, De Bruyne could be just eight games away from the end of his glittering run in sky blue.

But before any goodbyes, there’s still silverware to chase. This weekend, De Bruyne will be a crucial figure as City face Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semi-final—another chance for him to add to his legacy, and possibly, to leave on a high.
