In a move that has further strained US-Canada relations, President Donald Trump has once again suggested that Canada should join the United States as its 51st state. His latest remarks come just days after his administration imposed heavy tariffs on Canadian imports, a decision that has already triggered backlash from Ottawa.
Taking to his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump claimed that the US “subsidizes” Canada to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars, seemingly referring to the trade deficit between the two nations. “Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable country,” he wrote.

As a solution, Trump proposed annexation, stating that if Canada became “our Cherished 51st State”, it would benefit from lower taxes, stronger military protection, and—most notably—no tariffs.

Trump’s remarks have already drawn criticism, with Canadian officials and citizens expressing outrage over the suggestion of absorbing Canada into the US. The tariffs imposed on Canada, alongside Trump’s increasingly nationalist trade policies, have reignited tensions between the two historically close allies.

For Canada, the idea of becoming a US state is not just politically unrealistic but also deeply unpopular. While economic and security ties between the two nations remain strong, Canadians have long valued their independence and sovereignty—making Trump’s latest proposal more of a provocation than a serious policy discussion.
