The European Union (EU) has strongly criticized US President Donald Trump’s latest round of tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, warning that it will respond firmly if the 27-nation bloc is targeted. Until now, Brussels had sought to avoid a direct trade conflict with the US through negotiations.
On Friday, Trump doubled down on his protectionist trade stance, confirming that he “absolutely” plans to impose tariffs on the EU. His decision to levy tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China has already drawn sharp reactions from global trade partners, raising concerns about economic disruptions and inflation.

In response, a European Commission spokesman expressed regret over the US move, warning that such tariffs create “unnecessary economic disruption” and hurt all sides. “Tariffs drive inflation and are harmful to businesses and consumers alike.”

While the EU has not yet been directly targeted by Trump’s new trade measures, officials made it clear that any “unfair or arbitrary tariffs” on EU goods would be met with a firm response. “At this time, we are not aware of any additional tariffs on EU products, however, we remain committed to defending our economic interests”, the spokesperson stated.

Despite the growing tensions, the EU reaffirmed its commitment to a rules-based trading system and emphasized that low tariffs are key to economic growth and stability.
While Trump’s rhetoric suggests an escalating trade dispute, the EU has signaled its willingness to maintain a strong partnership with Washington. “The trade and investment relationship between the EU and the US is the largest in the world,” the spokesman noted. “There is a lot at stake—we should be looking to strengthen this relationship, not weaken it.”
