MTN Nigeria Pays N878.7 Billion in Taxes as Revenue and Profit Surge in 2025

MTN Nigeria has announced that it remitted N878.7 billion in taxes, levies, and duties to federal and state governments in the 2025 financial year, highlighting the growing role of major corporations in supporting Nigeria’s non-oil revenue drive.

The figure, disclosed in the company’s 2025 Sustainability Report, represents a 15 percent increase compared to the previous year and reflects MTN Nigeria’s strong financial recovery and expanding economic footprint across the country.

According to the report, the telecom giant paid N543.9 billion in taxes and levies in 2023 before increasing the amount to N764 billion in 2024. The latest remittance brings the company’s cumulative tax contributions over the last two years to an increase of roughly 62 percent.

The sharp rise in tax payments followed a major improvement in the company’s financial performance. MTN Nigeria reported a profit after tax of N1.11 trillion in 2025 after recovering from earlier foreign exchange-related losses. Total revenue also surged by 54.8 percent to N5.20 trillion, while operating profit climbed significantly to N2.08 trillion from N778.2 billion recorded previously.

The N878.7 billion paid to government authorities covered several obligations, including company income tax, value-added tax, import duties, spectrum fees, levies to the Nigerian Communications Commission, and contributions under infrastructure tax credit schemes.

The company also expanded its participation in national infrastructure development through the Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme. Under the initiative, MTN committed N202.8 billion toward the reconstruction of the 110-kilometre Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, one of the country’s major transport corridors.

In addition, the report revealed that the Rural and Urban Terrestrial Infrastructure scheme achieved 50 percent completion in 2025 after the company secured approval for an additional N23 billion tax credit to support the expansion of fibre optic and telecommunications infrastructure in underserved communities.

MTN Nigeria also highlighted its increasing investment in local content and domestic economic growth. According to the report, 62 percent of the company’s procurement spending in 2025 was directed toward Nigerian suppliers, up from 59.6 percent in the previous year.

The telecom provider stated that the approach aligns with the Federal Government’s local-content objectives while supporting industries such as civil engineering, logistics, software development, and power infrastructure.

Operationally, the company continued to expand its network presence nationwide, reaching 2,087 active base stations across Nigeria. MTN also reported 85.4 million active mobile subscribers by the third quarter of 2025, while active data users increased to 51.1 million, supported by smartphone penetration of 65.1 percent.

As part of its long-term strategy, MTN Nigeria also renewed its 800MHz spectrum licence for another 10 years, extending its validity until December 2034.

The latest figures reinforce the growing importance of the telecommunications sector in Nigeria’s economy, particularly as the government continues efforts to strengthen tax collection, improve infrastructure financing, and reduce dependence on oil revenue.
