Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Attend FIFA World Cup Final Against Argentina

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is set to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, adding political significance to one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

According to the Spanish Prime Minister’s office, Sánchez will travel to New Jersey for Sunday’s highly anticipated final, where Spain will battle defending football powerhouse Argentina for the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy.

The final is also expected to bring together two world leaders, as United States President Donald Trump is scheduled to be present at the match. With FIFA confirming that the winning team will receive the trophy during the post-match ceremony, there is a possibility that President Trump could present the World Cup trophy if Spain emerges victorious.

The meeting between Sánchez and Trump comes against the backdrop of ongoing diplomatic differences between both governments, particularly over defence spending and foreign policy.

In recent months, President Trump has repeatedly criticised Spain for declining to commit to NATO’s proposed defence spending target of 5 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The issue has been a recurring point of disagreement between Washington and Madrid, with Trump previously warning of potential trade consequences for Spain over its position.

During the recent NATO summit, Trump reportedly expressed frustration over Spain’s defence spending policy before later adopting a more conciliatory tone. He acknowledged that Spain had fulfilled its existing defence commitments, a remark that Spanish officials interpreted as recognition of the country’s compliance with the agreed NATO target of spending 2 percent of GDP on defence.

Relations between the two administrations were also tested earlier this year following Spain’s decision not to grant the United States access to its military bases and airspace during American military operations targeting Iran. Despite the disagreement, Sánchez maintained that Spain remains committed to maintaining strong and constructive relationships with its international allies.

The two leaders briefly met during the NATO summit, where they reportedly held a cordial and informal conversation that included discussions about the upcoming FIFA World Cup final alongside other issues.

Sánchez has made several official visits to the United States since taking office, primarily to attend sessions of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In 2023, he also travelled to Washington for bilateral talks with former U.S. President Joe Biden, reinforcing diplomatic ties between both nations.

Adding to Spain’s strong representation at the World Cup final, the Spanish royal family has also confirmed its attendance. King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía are all expected to be in the stadium to support the national team as it competes for football’s biggest prize.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup final promises to be more than just a clash between two football giants. Alongside the excitement on the pitch, the presence of world leaders and members of the Spanish royal family highlights the tournament’s global significance, bringing together sport, diplomacy and international attention on one of football’s most celebrated occasions.
