Trump Calls on Ilhan Omar to Resign Over ‘Fake Name’ Allegation

U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar to immediately resign from the U.S. House of Representatives, accusing her of using a false name when she was elected and sworn into office.

Trump made the demand in a Truth Social post on Thursday, October 22, 2026, after a federal court filing referred to the Minnesota lawmaker as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The filing did not explain the use of the additional name or establish that Omar had committed fraud.

The president argued that the name discrepancy raised questions about Omar’s eligibility to serve in Congress and called on House Speaker Mike Johnson to recognise her seat as vacant.

Omar, however, has rejected the accusation. Responding to Trump’s remarks, the congresswoman maintained that her name has always been Ilhan Omar, describing the allegations as false.

The dispute comes amid a federal investigation involving questions about Omar’s immigration and citizenship records. Federal agents searched her Washington, D.C., home on October 12 as part of the investigation, according to media reports.

Despite Trump’s claims, the court filing itself does not prove that the congresswoman used a fraudulent identity or that she is legally disqualified from serving in Congress.

The controversy has added another chapter to the ongoing political tensions between Trump and Omar, a frequent critic of the president and a prominent Democratic lawmaker representing Minnesota.

For now, Trump’s demand for her resignation remains a political call, while the allegations surrounding her name and immigration history remain separate issues that must be assessed on the available evidence.
