Hollywood is mourning the loss of veteran actor Tom Skerritt, best known for his memorable performances in Alien, Top Gun and the television drama Picket Fences. The Emmy-winning actor died on October 21, 2026, at the age of 93, his family confirmed. His death was attributed to natural causes.
Skerritt enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades, appearing in a wide range of films and television productions. Known for his understated screen presence and ability to portray authoritative, grounded characters, he became a familiar face to audiences across generations.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 25, 1933, Skerritt served four years in the United States Air Force before pursuing a career in acting. He made his film debut in War Hunt in 1962, appearing alongside Robert Redford. He gained wider recognition in Robert Altman’s 1970 war comedy MASH*, playing Captain Augustus “Duke” Forrest.
His career continued to grow with roles in films such as The Turning Point (1977), Alien (1979), Steel Magnolias (1989) and A River Runs Through It (1992).
One of Skerritt’s most iconic roles came in Ridley Scott’s science-fiction horror film Alien, released in 1979. He portrayed Captain Arthur Dallas, commander of the spacecraft Nostromo, whose crew encounters a deadly extraterrestrial creature.
In 1986, he appeared in Top Gun as Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf, the experienced flight instructor who guides the young naval aviators played by Tom Cruise and his co-stars. Skerritt also earned widespread acclaim on television for playing Sheriff Jimmy Brock in Picket Fences, which ran from 1992 to 1996. His performance earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1993.
Following his death, Skerritt’s family remembered him not only for his achievements on screen but also for his humour, curiosity, wisdom and generosity.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, his family said that while audiences knew him through his acting career, they knew him for the love he brought into their lives. They also highlighted his interest in storytelling, support for veterans, concern for the natural world and commitment to helping others express themselves.
His former co-stars have also paid tribute. Julia Roberts, who appeared alongside him in Steel Magnolias, remembered him as “a shining light.” Kathy Baker, his co-star in Picket Fences, described him as a dear friend and a gracious colleague who taught her a great deal during their time working together.
Skerritt is survived by his wife, Julie Tokashiki, and his five children. His family has requested privacy as they grieve, with details of a memorial to be shared at a later date.
Tom Skerritt leaves behind a body of work that spans science fiction, comedy, drama and television. From the tense corridors of Alien to the training grounds of Top Gun and the small-town world of Picket Fences, his performances helped make him one of Hollywood’s recognisable and respected character actors.
His death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in American entertainment, but his performances will continue to reach audiences through the films and television shows that defined his long career.
