Electronic Arts (EA) has announced the closure of BioWare, the legendary video game studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The decision also brings an end to early development on the next Mass Effect game, marking a major turning point for one of gaming’s most influential role-playing game developers.
The gaming industry has been hit with major news following EA’s decision to shut down BioWare after more than three decades of creating memorable gaming experiences.
The Edmonton-based studio confirmed the news on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, in a statement reflecting on its history and thanking fans who supported its games over the years. For millions of players who grew up exploring distant galaxies, making difficult moral choices and building relationships with fictional characters, the announcement marks the end of an important chapter in gaming history.
One of the biggest consequences of the closure is the cancellation of BioWare’s next Mass Effect project, which had been in early development.
The game was first announced in December 2020, generating excitement among fans eager to return to the science-fiction universe that made the franchise famous. Although details about the upcoming title remained limited, promotional material had suggested a connection to the original trilogy, leaving players curious about the next chapter of the story.
However, EA has now confirmed that it will not proceed with development. The cancellation means fans will have to wait for further information about the future of the franchise. EA has not announced that the entire Mass Effect intellectual property is permanently retired, so the cancellation of this particular project should not automatically be interpreted as the end of the series forever.
Founded in 1995, BioWare built its reputation on games that allowed players to influence stories through their decisions. Some of its most recognised titles include:
- Mass Effect: A science-fiction role-playing series known for its memorable characters, branching decisions and galaxy-spanning storylines.
- Dragon Age: A fantasy franchise featuring political conflict, magic, companion relationships and consequential player choices.
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: A celebrated role-playing game set in the Star Wars universe.
- Baldur’s Gate: A foundational computer role-playing game series that helped establish BioWare’s reputation for deep storytelling.
- Neverwinter Nights: A fantasy role-playing game known for its character customisation and community-created adventures.
These games helped establish BioWare as a major name in narrative-driven gaming, with players often forming lasting attachments to their characters and the fictional worlds they explored. The studio’s closure therefore affects more than a single upcoming release. It also marks the loss of a development team whose work influenced generations of role-playing games.
EA says the decision forms part of a broader restructuring designed to concentrate its resources on fewer projects and areas where it sees stronger opportunities for growth. The company has cited changing player expectations, intensifying competition and the need to focus its investments as factors behind its wider strategic shift.
BioWare had faced commercial challenges in recent years. Its multiplayer action game Anthem struggled to establish a lasting audience, while Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet EA’s sales expectations. These difficulties formed part of the broader business context surrounding the restructuring, although EA’s announcement presents the closure as a strategic decision rather than attributing it to one game alone.
The restructuring is expected to affect approximately 400 employees across EA, representing about 3% of its workforce. Roughly 50 of those positions are associated with BioWare.
EA has said it will help affected employees explore other opportunities within the company where suitable positions are available. Nevertheless, the announcement raises serious questions about the future of experienced developers, writers, artists, designers and other professionals whose work helped build BioWare’s reputation.
For the wider gaming industry, the cuts are another reminder of how quickly development priorities can change, even at established studios with decades of successful releases.
BioWare’s closure does not automatically mean that EA has abandoned ownership of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises.
The company has not announced that the intellectual properties themselves are being retired permanently. However, the cancellation of the next Mass Effect project leaves uncertainty about what future games, if any, might be developed using these brands.
EA has indicated that it will continue investing in other major projects, including the next Star Wars Jedi game and its planned Marvel’s Iron Man title. For now, fans of BioWare’s franchises will have to wait for further announcements regarding their future.
EA’s decision to close BioWare and cancel its next Mass Effect game marks a significant moment for the video game industry.
For more than 30 years, the studio created worlds that encouraged players to make difficult choices, form meaningful connections with characters and experience stories shaped by their actions. Although BioWare’s legacy will live on through the games it created, the closure leaves fans wondering what might have been possible with its next Mass Effect adventure.
