Joe Russo Calls Tom Holland ‘The Last Great Movie Star’ in Hollywood

Avengers: Doomsday co-director Joe Russo has praised Tom Holland, describing the British actor as “the last great movie star” and saying he possesses a rare, old-fashioned quality that is increasingly difficult to find in Hollywood.

Russo made the remarks during an interview with entertainment outlet CBR while discussing Holland’s popularity and the success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The filmmaker highlighted the actor’s charm, authenticity and ability to connect with audiences, describing these qualities as central to his appeal.

“He’s the last great movie star. There’s a vintage quality to Tom Holland that feels like it comes from a time that doesn’t exist now,” Russo said. He added that although Hollywood still has many talented stars, Holland has a distinctive energy that sets him apart.

Russo’s praise goes beyond Holland’s fame as Spider-Man. The director pointed to the actor’s warmth, genuine personality and natural performances as qualities that help him establish a strong connection with viewers.

According to Russo, Holland brings a sense of authenticity to his roles, particularly his portrayal of Peter Parker. He believes the actor captures the character in a way that feels faithful to the original Marvel comics. The director also described Holland’s appeal as evidence of his star power, suggesting that audiences respond not only to the characters he plays but also to the personality and energy he brings to the screen.

Russo and his brother, Anthony Russo, have worked with Holland on several major productions, including Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. They also directed him in the drama Cherry.

Their experience working together gives Russo a close perspective on Holland’s development as an actor, from his introduction as Spider-Man to his performances in more dramatic roles.

Holland has become one of the most recognisable faces in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, building a global fan base through his portrayal of the web-slinging superhero.

Russo’s statement also touches on a wider debate about the changing nature of Hollywood stardom.

In earlier eras, major movie stars often attracted audiences through their individual screen presence, charisma and ability to carry different kinds of films. Today, blockbuster franchises, established intellectual property and familiar fictional characters can play a significant role in drawing moviegoers to cinemas.

Russo’s comments suggest that he believes Holland possesses the kind of personal appeal associated with Hollywood’s classic leading men.

However, calling Holland the “last great movie star” is Russo’s personal assessment, not an established industry consensus. Other contemporary actors also command significant audiences and critical recognition, and the meaning of movie stardom continues to evolve.

Despite Russo’s praise, Holland’s involvement in Avengers: Doomsday has not been officially confirmed in the reports surrounding the interview. His future role in the next Avengers films therefore remains a separate question from Russo’s comments about his star power.

For now, the director’s remarks have added to the conversation surrounding Holland’s place in modern cinema and the qualities that make an actor stand out in a crowded entertainment industry.
