Elon Musk Returns to Trillionaire Club After SpaceX Stock Surge

Elon Musk has once again crossed the $1 trillion mark in estimated net worth, returning to trillionaire status after strong gains in the shares of his companies SpaceX and Tesla.

According to Forbes, Musk’s fortune surpassed $1 trillion after U.S. markets opened on Monday, October 5, as shares in SpaceX and Tesla climbed. The increase restored his position as the world’s richest person and marked his return to the trillionaire club after previously falling below the threshold.

Musk had first become the world’s first trillionaire in June following the start of trading in SpaceX, but his fortune subsequently dropped below $1 trillion as SpaceX and Tesla shares declined.

His latest rise follows a strong performance by both companies. SpaceX shares climbed more than 5% early Monday, while Tesla also recorded gains. The moves came after Musk’s wealth had already jumped by about $61 billion on Friday as both companies’ shares rallied.

Forbes had estimated Musk’s fortune at about $979.7 billion on Friday before the latest market gains. Its real-time billionaire tracker subsequently showed his wealth at approximately $981 billion at one point on October 5, illustrating how quickly billionaire wealth estimates can change during trading.

Much of Musk’s wealth is tied to his ownership stakes in SpaceX and Tesla, meaning changes in the value of those companies can cause significant fluctuations in his estimated net worth.

The latest milestone reinforces Musk’s extraordinary position at the top of the global wealth rankings. Forbes’ real-time list continues to place him well ahead of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, whose estimated fortune was around $371 billion on October 5.

Because billionaire net-worth figures are estimates based largely on changing asset values, Musk’s exact fortune can move by billions of dollars within hours as markets fluctuate. For now, however, the SpaceX and Tesla rally has pushed Musk back above the historic $1 trillion threshold.
