Elon Musk’s estimated net worth jumped by about $61 billion in a single day as shares of Tesla and SpaceX rose sharply, pushing the world’s richest person closer to the $1 trillion mark.
According to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires list, Musk’s fortune reached an estimated $979.7 billion by 2:15 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, October 2, representing a 6.64% increase from the previous day. The increase was driven largely by gains in the share prices of Tesla and SpaceX. SpaceX shares climbed more than 7% to about $158.84, while Tesla stock rose roughly 5% to around $371.32 during Friday’s trading session.
SpaceX’s gains came after the company completed several successful launches within a 24-hour period. The company’s recent launch activity has helped strengthen investor sentiment toward the rocket and satellite business.
Tesla also contributed to Musk’s wealth increase after the electric vehicle company reported 486,532 vehicle deliveries in the third quarter of 2026, exceeding analysts’ expectations. The stronger-than-expected delivery figures helped lift the company’s shares during Friday’s trading.
Musk’s fortune is particularly sensitive to movements in Tesla and SpaceX because a significant portion of his wealth is tied to his ownership stakes in the two companies. As their market values change, his estimated net worth can rise or fall by tens of billions of dollars within a single trading session.
Musk had previously crossed the $1 trillion threshold in June after SpaceX went public, making him the first person to reach the milestone according to Forbes. His fortune subsequently fell below the threshold following declines in SpaceX shares and changes affecting the valuation of his Tesla holdings.
As of Friday afternoon, Musk remained at the top of Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires list, with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos estimated at approximately $370.7 billion.
With Musk’s fortune now less than $21 billion below the trillion-dollar mark, further movements in Tesla and SpaceX shares could significantly change the estimate.
