Bus Driver Escapes Prosecution After NDLEA Finds Drugs Hidden in Fearless Bottle

A commercial bus driver in Lagos narrowly escaped possible prosecution after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) discovered illicit drugs concealed inside a bottle of Fearless energy drink he had accepted as a waybill package.

According to NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the driver was given the package in Lagos for delivery to Ondo State. Believing that the bottle contained an ordinary energy drink, he accepted it without knowing what had been concealed inside.

The situation changed when NDLEA operatives intercepted the parcel and inspected the bottle. The agency said the container had been tampered with and used to conceal illicit substances, identified by Babafemi as Colos, a synthetic cannabinoid, and methamphetamine.

The driver was reportedly taken into custody and could have faced serious legal consequences because the drugs were found in a package in his possession. However, NDLEA officers were able to trace and arrest the individual who had handed the parcel to him, which helped prevent the driver from being left responsible for the drugs.

Babafemi used the incident to warn commercial drivers, dispatch riders and members of the public against accepting parcels whose contents they cannot verify. He stressed that simply being unaware of what is inside a package may not necessarily protect someone from the consequences of being found in possession of illicit drugs.

The NDLEA’s warning comes as a reminder to transport workers who routinely accept waybill packages from passengers and customers. The agency urged them to establish the contents of parcels before agreeing to transport them, particularly when the package is sealed or its contents cannot be independently confirmed.

For the Lagos driver, tracing the person who supplied the parcel proved crucial in preventing the incident from turning into a prosecution. The NDLEA, however, warned that other drivers may not receive the same outcome if the source of a suspicious package cannot be established.
