Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that Israel’s enemies could attempt to attack the country ahead of its October 27, 2026, election. Netanyahu made the statement on September 29 during a visit to the Tel Nof Air Force Base. He said Israel had received indications that its adversaries might seek to launch an attack before voters go to the polls.
“We have indications that ahead of the elections our enemies will try to attack us,” Netanyahu said in a video released by his office. He did not identify the countries or groups he was referring to, nor did he disclose details about the nature, timing or location of any potential attack.
Netanyahu also issued a warning to Israel’s adversaries, saying the country’s military would be capable of reaching them wherever they were.
The statement prompted concern among opposition politicians, who called for more information about the alleged security threat. Opposition leader Yair Lapid requested an urgent briefing from Netanyahu, saying he wanted to know whether the threats were genuine and what measures were being taken to ensure the election could proceed without disruption.
Netanyahu subsequently briefed Lapid on the security situation. After the meeting, Lapid said there was no reason to cause public panic and argued that security threats should be handled through the appropriate security channels.
Israeli security officials have also provided a more cautious assessment. The Jerusalem Post reported that officials said Israel was on high alert but that there was no specific intelligence warning of an imminent attack at the time. The warning comes as Israel prepares for its October 27 election amid continuing regional tensions. Netanyahu has repeatedly highlighted national security and threats from Israel’s adversaries during the election campaign.
For now, Netanyahu’s statement represents a warning based on what he described as intelligence indications rather than confirmation that an attack is imminent.
