TikTok Access Disrupted in Parts of Northern Nigeria for Several Days

TikTok users in several parts of Northern Nigeria have reported difficulties accessing the popular video-sharing platform, with some users saying the disruption has continued for several days. Reports have emerged from states including Kaduna, Kano and Sokoto, where users say TikTok has failed to load properly, videos have stopped playing and feeds have struggled to refresh when using regular internet connections.

Some affected users have reported that TikTok becomes accessible after connecting through a virtual private network (VPN), while others say the platform remains difficult or impossible to use through their normal mobile data or Wi-Fi connections.

The reports have sparked speculation that access to TikTok may have been deliberately restricted in parts of the North. However, there is currently no official confirmation that the Nigerian government or telecommunications regulators ordered a restriction on the platform.

The exact cause remains unclear. Technical problems involving internet-service-provider routing, network configuration, connectivity issues or TikTok itself could potentially produce similar symptoms. The fact that some users can access the platform through a VPN indicates that rerouting internet traffic may bypass whatever is interfering with normal access, but it does not by itself prove that authorities imposed a block.

The disruption also does not appear to affect every Nigerian TikTok user equally. Reports have been concentrated in particular parts of Northern Nigeria rather than indicating a confirmed nationwide shutdown.

The access problems have emerged shortly after renewed calls for the Nigerian government to consider restricting TikTok. Lere Olayinka, an aide to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, recently called for the platform to be banned or more strictly regulated following a child-abuse case in Anambra State involving alleged exploitation of a minor.

However, a public call for a ban is different from an official government order, and no verified evidence currently establishes that the reported Northern Nigerian disruption is connected to that demand.

TikTok has become an important platform for Nigerian content creators, entertainers, entrepreneurs and small businesses, many of whom use it to promote products, reach customers and build audiences. A prolonged access problem could therefore affect more than entertainment, particularly for businesses and creators who depend heavily on the platform for marketing and communication.

For now, users in affected areas are left waiting for an explanation as reports of access problems continue. Unless Nigerian authorities, telecommunications companies or TikTok provide further clarification, it remains unclear whether the disruption is the result of a technical or network problem, or whether any deliberate restriction has been imposed.
