Nvidia Trailer Heist Goes Wrong as Thieves Discover 20 Tons of Sand

A group of thieves in California appears to have targeted two trailers bearing Nvidia and PlusAI logos, apparently expecting to find valuable artificial intelligence hardware inside. Instead, they ended up hauling away roughly 40,000 pounds (18 tonnes) of sand.

The unusual theft happened at the warehouse of PlusAI, an autonomous trucking company that is working with Nvidia on AI software and self-driving truck technology. The two trailers were parked outside the company’s facility in Newark, California, when their hand locks were broken and the trailers were taken.

The theft was discovered after a PlusAI executive received an unexpected message from an acquaintance who had spotted what appeared to be the company’s trucks near their workplace, about half a mile from the warehouse.

Police were contacted, and the trailers were subsequently recovered. When the trailers were opened, however, there were no Nvidia GPUs, AI servers or other expensive computing equipment inside. Instead, each trailer contained approximately 20,000 pounds of sand. The sand was there intentionally.

PlusAI said it uses simulated loads in its trailers to assist with research and development testing. By loading the trailers with heavy material, engineers can simulate the weight of real freight and study how autonomous trucks behave under different driving conditions without putting valuable commercial cargo at risk.

The actual technology-equipped truck cabs were reportedly parked securely inside the warehouse and were not stolen. Only the trailers were taken.

The Nvidia branding may have made the trailers particularly attractive to the thieves. Nvidia has become closely associated with the enormous demand for AI chips and data-center hardware, which has also contributed to a rise in thefts targeting expensive technology shipments.

In this case, however, the branding appears to have created a very different outcome. Instead of potentially valuable AI hardware, the thieves ended up with a load designed simply to imitate the weight of cargo.

The trailers were recovered with the 40,000 pounds of sand still intact, according to PlusAI. Fremont police said the case remains under investigation and that no arrests had been made at the time of the report.

The incident comes as cargo theft involving high-value technology equipment becomes an increasing concern in the United States. Recent thefts have targeted computer equipment, data-center hardware and other valuable technology.

For the thieves who targeted the Nvidia-branded trailers, however, the apparent AI jackpot turned out to be something much heavier and considerably less valuable: 20 tonnes of sand.
