NAF Chief Leads Delegation to Texas for AH-1Z Viper Helicopter Milestone

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has led a delegation of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to Bell Textron in Amarillo, Texas, for a beam-signing ceremony marking progress in Nigeria’s acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.

The ceremony represents a significant milestone in the Nigerian Air Force’s effort to strengthen its attack-helicopter capability and improve support for ongoing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations. During the visit, Air Marshal Aneke and members of the NAF delegation participated in the traditional beam-signing ceremony at Bell Textron’s facility, marking Nigeria’s participation in the production process for the aircraft.

The AH-1Z Viper is a twin-engine attack helicopter designed primarily for close air support, armed reconnaissance and precision engagement of ground targets. It is equipped with advanced sensors, weapons and targeting systems.

The acquisition of the 12 helicopters forms part of Nigeria’s broader effort to modernise its air capabilities and provide the armed forces with additional platforms for operations against terrorist and insurgent groups.

The Nigerian Air Force has in recent years expanded its fleet through the acquisition of new aircraft and helicopters, while also upgrading existing platforms. The addition of the AH-1Z Vipers is expected to provide the NAF with another dedicated attack-helicopter platform capable of supporting ground forces in complex operational environments.

The visit to Bell Textron also highlights the growing defence relationship between Nigeria and the United States. Beyond the aircraft acquisition itself, programmes of this nature typically involve training, maintenance, logistics and technical support to ensure that the aircraft can be effectively operated and sustained after delivery.

The beam-signing ceremony therefore represents more than a symbolic event, as it marks progress toward the production and eventual delivery of the helicopters to Nigeria. The NAF is expected to continue working with Bell Textron and other partners as the programme advances toward completion and operational deployment.
