Paying college tuition in the United States just got another digital option, as PayPal and Venmo are now available for tuition and fee payments at participating universities.
The new payment option allows students and their families to pay directly through their school’s existing online payment portal, rather than having to arrange a separate payment process. The rollout is being supported through integrations with education payment platforms including Illumia, Nelnet Campus Commerce and TouchNet.
The service is already live at several universities, including Michigan State University, Butler University, Bellarmine University, Kansas State University and Texas Tech University, with more institutions expected to add the option later this year.
Students can fund their tuition payments using a linked bank account, credit card, or an eligible PayPal or Venmo balance. The companies say transactions will benefit from the same encryption and fraud-monitoring systems used across their payment services.
The move represents a significant expansion of PayPal and Venmo beyond everyday peer-to-peer transfers and online shopping. College tuition is one of the largest payments many families make, and bringing the services directly into university payment systems could make it easier for students and parents who already use the platforms.
However, convenience could come with additional costs. Universities may charge transaction or service fees, depending on the institution and payment method. For example, some schools may treat PayPal or Venmo payments similarly to credit-card transactions when determining applicable fees.
There are also consumer-protection considerations when using digital payment platforms for large transactions. Experts have warned that sending tens of thousands of dollars through a payment app carries different risks from using such services for ordinary purchases or sending money to friends.
For PayPal, the expansion is part of a broader push to strengthen its presence in the college ecosystem. The company has also expanded relationships with college sports and student-athletes, giving it more opportunities to become part of students’ financial lives.
With more universities expected to join, PayPal and Venmo could soon become familiar options for one of the biggest bills American college students and their families face each year.
