INEC Begins Distribution of Sensitive Materials Ahead of Osun Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of sensitive election materials to the 30 local government areas of Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The exercise began on Thursday night under the supervision of the Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, as the electoral commission moved to ensure that materials reach their designated locations before voting begins.

The distribution had been delayed following a Federal High Court ruling directing INEC to include the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on the ballot for the election.

Following the court order, the SDP was added to the list of 14 political parties whose ballot papers had already been printed. INEC consequently had to produce additional ballot papers and result sheets, creating fresh logistical demands for the commission.

By about 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, buses deployed for the distribution exercise were seen leaving the Central Bank of Nigeria premises in Osogbo for their assigned local government areas.

The movement of the materials offered some relief to stakeholders who had been concerned that the court ruling and the resulting need to reprint election materials could affect the election timetable.

Speaking with journalists, Umar Mohammed, Senior Programme Manager at the Kimpat Development Initiative, described the arrival and distribution of the materials as a positive development.

He said there had been concerns that the court decision could create enough logistical difficulties to force a postponement of the election. However, the commencement of the distribution suggested that INEC was still working towards conducting the poll as scheduled.

Mohammed also commended INEC’s deployment approach, noting that the commission appeared to be prioritising local government areas considered more remote and difficult to reach.

Despite the progress, he raised concerns about the weather, particularly the possibility of rainfall disrupting the movement of election materials across the state.

He noted that dark clouds were already gathering and expressed hope that heavy rain would not interfere with the distribution process.

With the sensitive materials now being moved to the 30 local government areas, attention has shifted to the final preparations for Saturday’s Osun governorship election.

The timely delivery of election materials remains critical to ensuring that polling units open as scheduled and that voters across the state can participate in the election without unnecessary delays.

INEC’s ability to complete the distribution despite the late addition of the SDP to the ballot will now be closely watched as Osun prepares for the governorship poll.
