Fire at Justrite Superstore in Akowonjo Fully Extinguished, No Casualties Recorded

A fire outbreak at the Justrite Superstore on Akowonjo Road, Egbeda, Lagos, has been successfully extinguished, with emergency officials confirming that the situation is fully under control and no casualties were recorded.

The incident occurred at the supermarket located at No. 116 Akowonjo Road, Jimoh Bus Stop, where the fire affected the electronics section on the second floor of the commercial building. Thanks to the swift response of emergency agencies, the blaze was contained before it could spread to other parts of the store.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, a distress call was received at approximately 8:15 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters from the Abesan and Agege Fire Stations. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene within minutes and quickly began firefighting operations that successfully brought the situation under control.

Officials confirmed that the fire has now been completely extinguished, while recovery and mopping-up operations have also been concluded. The prompt intervention helped protect lives, prevent further property damage, and stop the fire from affecting adjoining sections of the building.

The Controller of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed that no deaths or injuries were recorded during the incident. Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have originated from an alternative power source, believed to be a solar inverter system, although investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause.

The emergency operation involved a coordinated response from multiple agencies. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) deployed its Dolphin Response Team, working alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and officers from the Shasha Division of the Nigeria Police Force.

In a separate emergency earlier the same morning, LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team responded to a container truck accident at Aiye Bus Stop, inward Aswani, after receiving a distress call around 8:22 a.m.

According to the agency, the truck, which was transporting a 40-foot container, became stuck after one of its front tyres slipped into a roadside drainage channel. Preliminary investigations indicated that reckless driving may have contributed to the accident.

To prevent severe traffic congestion, LASEMA collaborated with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to divert traffic while its heavy-duty recovery vehicle, Super Metro, removed the truck from the roadway. The vehicle was later handed over to the police, and officials confirmed that no injuries or fatalities resulted from the incident.

Commending the coordinated response, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, praised the professionalism and collaboration displayed by all responding agencies. He said the successful handling of both emergencies reflects the effectiveness of Lagos State’s emergency management system and the government’s continued investment in modern equipment, personnel training, and inter-agency coordination.

He also encouraged motorists to obey traffic regulations and avoid reckless driving, while urging business owners to strengthen fire prevention measures and regularly inspect electrical and alternative power systems to reduce the risk of future fire outbreaks.

The successful containment of the Justrite Superstore fire and the swift clearance of the container truck accident once again demonstrate the importance of rapid emergency response and coordinated public safety efforts in safeguarding lives and property across Lagos State.
