A High Court in Calabar, Cross River State, has sentenced John Sunday Eyo to life imprisonment after convicting him of r@ping a 16-year-old girl. The judgment was delivered on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, by Justice Blessing Egwu, who found the defendant guilty of the offence after considering the evidence presented during the trial.
The conviction marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for survivors of sexual violence and underscores the judiciary’s resolve to hold offenders accountable under the law.
Reacting to the court’s decision, the Basic Rights Council Initiatives (BRCI), the organization that handled the case, welcomed the verdict and described it as a victory for justice. The group commended the Cross River State Police Command for its diligent investigation and the support it provided throughout the prosecution.
BRCI also praised the Attorney General of Cross River State, Etubom Ededem Ani, and the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Okoi Ukam, for their dedication and commitment to ensuring that justice was served.
The organization noted that the successful prosecution demonstrates the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, the judiciary, and civil society organizations in tackling sexual offences and protecting vulnerable members of society.
