ValueJet Expands Operations with First Boeing 737, Eyes New African Routes

Nigerian airline ValueJet is preparing to enter a new phase of growth with the planned addition of its first Boeing 737 aircraft, a strategic move aimed at increasing passenger capacity, expanding regional connectivity, and strengthening its presence across Africa.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the airline described the arrival of the Boeing aircraft as a significant milestone in its long-term expansion strategy. Since launching commercial operations, ValueJet has operated a fleet of Bombardier CRJ aircraft, establishing itself as a reliable carrier in Nigeria’s domestic aviation market and gradually extending services to selected West African destinations.

The introduction of the Boeing 737 is expected to complement the airline’s existing fleet by offering greater seating capacity, increased cargo capability, and the ability to operate longer-range flights. The expansion is also expected to support the launch of additional regional and international routes as demand for air travel continues to grow across the continent.

ValueJet currently operates flights connecting major Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Calabar, Kano, Jos, Benin City, and Gateway International Airport in Iperu. Beyond Nigeria, the airline has expanded its network to Accra, Ghana, and Banjul, The Gambia, reinforcing its ambition to become a key player in regional aviation.

As part of preparations for the fleet expansion, the airline has commenced an intensive technical training programme for its aircraft maintenance engineers in Lagos. The initiative is being facilitated by Boeing in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

According to ValueJet, the specialised training is designed to equip its engineers with the expertise required to maintain Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft. The programme covers critical areas such as avionics, airframe systems, power plants, electrical systems, maintenance procedures, safety protocols, and operational best practices in accordance with European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) standards.

Commenting on the development, ValueJet’s Managing Director and Accountable Officer, Captain Omololu Majekodunmi, described the acquisition of the Boeing aircraft as a defining moment in the airline’s history. He noted that the investment goes beyond expanding the fleet, emphasizing that building technical capacity is essential to maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational excellence.

Majekodunmi said the airline remains committed to providing safe, reliable, and customer-focused services while preparing for a future that includes larger aircraft and a broader route network. He added that investing in the continuous development of the airline’s engineering workforce would ensure the company remains well-positioned for sustainable growth.

Also speaking on the expansion, ValueJet Chairman Adekunle Soname described the Boeing acquisition as a strategic investment that will strengthen the airline’s competitiveness within Africa’s aviation industry.

According to Soname, the larger aircraft will significantly improve ValueJet’s operational capacity and range, enabling the airline to connect more African cities while supporting trade, tourism, business travel, and economic integration across the continent. He reaffirmed the company’s vision of building an airline capable of connecting Nigeria with key destinations across Africa and beyond.

Following the induction of the Boeing 737, ValueJet plans to expand its international network by launching flights to Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire, Libreville in Gabon, and Douala in Cameroon. The airline also has long-term plans to extend operations to destinations in Kenya and South Africa, further strengthening its footprint in the African aviation market.

The planned fleet expansion represents a major step in ValueJet’s growth journey and reflects the airline’s ambition to become one of Nigeria’s leading carriers, offering improved connectivity, greater travel options, and enhanced service for passengers across Africa.
