Christian Pulisic Misses USA’s World Cup Clash Against Australia Due to Calf Injury

The United States national team was forced to face Australia without one of its biggest stars after Christian Pulisic was ruled out of Friday’s World Cup encounter due to a calf injury.

The setback comes just days after the American captain was forced off at halftime during the USA’s impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their tournament opener. Pulisic had aggravated an injury sustained during training before the match, raising concerns about his availability for the crucial Group D showdown against Australia.

Speaking before kickoff, U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that the AC Milan forward was unavailable for selection but expressed optimism that the influential attacker could return later in the tournament.

According to Pochettino, Pulisic’s condition is improving, and the medical team is working closely with him to ensure a safe recovery. However, the coaching staff opted against taking any risks that could potentially worsen the injury and jeopardize his participation in the remainder of the World Cup.

The decision follows a cautious week for the 27-year-old, who did not take part in full training sessions. While the squad trained at its base camp in Irvine, California, Pulisic worked separately with medical staff and trainers, focusing on recovery and light ball exercises. He was also absent from the portion of Thursday’s training session that was open to the media.

Pulisic’s absence represents a significant blow for the United States, given the key role he played in the opening victory over Paraguay. The midfielder was one of the standout performers before being substituted at halftime and has long been regarded as one of the team’s most important attacking threats.

With the team unwilling to risk further complications, Pochettino turned to striker Ricardo Pepi to help fill the void against Australia at Lumen Field. The selection came as a surprise to many observers, as the coach has often preferred Folarin Balogun as his primary center forward.

Before the match, speculation had suggested that a winger such as Tim Weah or Alex Zendejas could be brought into the starting lineup, while midfielders Sebastian Berhalter and Gio Reyna were also considered possible replacements.

Instead, Pepi was handed the opportunity to start after making his World Cup debut as a substitute in the opening game. The striker replaced Balogun, who scored twice against Paraguay, during the latter stages of that match.

Despite losing their captain, the United States entered the contest with confidence after their strong start to the tournament. A victory over Australia would strengthen their position at the top of Group D and move them closer to securing a place in the knockout rounds.

For now, attention remains focused on Pulisic’s recovery timeline. American supporters will be hoping the star playmaker can return to full fitness quickly, as the team’s ambitions of making a deep World Cup run could depend heavily on having one of their most experienced and creative players available in the decisive stages of the competition.
